Just Find A Way To Dancing With Our Hands Tied
How does plausible deniability work? Is it something only women get to do as societal penance for the fact that we have to suffer through ensuring our entire body is shorn of hair below the eyebrows? Or do men get to do plausible deniability too?
I recently re-watched “When Harry Met Sally” and I really love this one scene. Harry and Sally are finally friends after their respective breakups. They are helping each other deal with their breakups as sort of therapists who also care about each other immensely. And then in this scene they are at the Met and Harry is doing weird voices (Billy Crystal just came up with that, ad libbed it!!) and keeps asking Sally to repeat his words after him, and then just like that, plausibly deniababably he slips in:
“Would you like to go to the movies with me tonight?”
And when she repeats it he goes “Not to repeat, please to answer”
She goes “"I’d love to go Harry, but I can’t!” — she looks contrite, he’s her friend, she’s feeling guilty, her giant Meg Ryan eyes are all anxious and troubled.
